Thanks, FlautoNP. Hooray for nurse practicioners! I am a 58-year-old career changer back in school and heading for a SW career - possibly with those my age and lots older. Thank you for sharing some good news - and for being so aware of battered women's issues. Sound like teamwork between professionals made a big difference in your patient's life.
I suspect her life isn't the only one y'all helped.

Dear FlautoNP,

I’m managing editor of the magazine ADVANCE for Nurse Practitioners, a glossy, professional journal distributed to more than 60,000 NPs nationwide each month. I just read your July 29, 2008, blog post about your domestic violence patient, and I’m wondering if you would let us run in it as the Back Page column in our 2009 special issue for student and new grad NPs.

I’d ask you to pare down the essay to about 900 words. We could identify your Web site in your bio or not, as you prefer, and we could discuss any issues of anonymity. You would receive a copy of the issue and a small honorarium ($50) when the issue is published in March 2009. (The article’s from this year’s issue are available online under the Student/New Grad Center here: http://www.advanceweb.com/np.)

Please let me know if you’re interested. I look forward to hearing from you!

I'm a soon to be BSN graduate (just 4 more months).

If I had known what I know now about the state of nursing as a profession and all the blah blah I might have thought twice about choosing this profession. Don't get me wrong, I love providing nursing care. However, I often feel that nursing is its own worst enemy. It's as if we're fighting so many battles that we don't even remember what our goal is anymore.

I think we need to pick a few battles carefully and fight tooth and nail for those causes. However, for some reason, there is within nursing, a culture of apathy.

Great blog, I look forward to reading more.

Let me guess: you have a Pearl. I traded mine for a Curve, which for some reason works better with my Mac. Also has more memory for my med stuff. The free Epocrates seems OK, or Skyscape has the Davis manual. I think Skyscape is evil and wrong, but they're the big name in the game so I buy from them anyway. I was a Palm fangirl until a few months ago when I went from Centro to BlackBerry: the learning curve is steep but worth it!!
